ALERT ! ! !   SPOILAGE ENSUES

. . . is a well made, well acted movie that is just a bit too messy and ugly for me. It's on the edge of being something that John Waters would have thought of and then decided against. It left me with the nagging question, "What for?"  A girl from a family of vegetarian veterinarians goes off to school to be---you guessed it---a veterinarian.  During rush week or hazing week or whatever you call it (at a veterinary college?), she is forced to eat a raw rabbit kidney as part of the hazing.  She then turns into not just a carnivore, but a cannibal as well.  Turns out her sister who attends the same school has the same affliction and, as is eventually revealed, so do her parents.  Seems the rubber band effect of being uptight vegetarians their whole lives and then suddenly getting a taste of meat sent them over the edge.

Many gruesome scenes ensue all shot with the modern miracle of Euro-pacing, meaning that each scene is at least twice as long as it needs to be, driving the "ick" factor up past where you thought it could go.  This is the second movie in as many weeks from France that contains needlessly ugly scenes.  Remaining Vertical, however had a lot more engaging story line and ended up being more watchable.  The critics liked Raw a lot more than I did.

FUR ALERT (a new service of the Hurtling Butt-First Through Time page):  The younger sister has hairy armpits and pubic hair that extends beyond her panty lines.  So you know.

DANGER, WILL ROBINSON ! ! !  This movie is entirely French with English subtitles.  If you don't read English particularly well, you may experience higher than usual levels of befuddlement.
