When my 335 was stolen and I decided to go Strat for a while, I played every strat in town---I had about $3,500 in insurance money to play with. We had four full time retail music stores in town then (we have Guitar Center now) and I think I played about 20 Srats. The "stratiest" sounding, best playing one was an American-made Strat for $800. It sounded way better than the most expensive one in town, a custom shop reissue  for around $3,000. And it had far better tuners and a better whammy bar. Much of the hardware on the custom shop reissue was crap on purpose because it had been crap in 1954 and it had to match.  "Vintage" all-original authenticity buys you resale value, not playability or good tone.
