Windows is a piece of shit,

Piece of shit,
Piece of shit.
Windows is a piece of shit,
Tra-la-la-la laaaaaah!

I bought this machine at least six years ago.  I realize that's old for a computer nowadays (it's probably real close to eight years old because I probably ordered it when I got hired on at The Workplace of Tomorrow at what seemed an obscene salary at the time (now I wonder how I lived on it)).

Anyway, the guy I bought it from talked me into 512MB of RAM.  He said, "You don't need it now, but you will--trust me."  Truer words would never have been spoken had those words not turned out to be such an understatement.  When I got the computer, after booting up, TaskManager would show something like 350 to 380 of the 512MB available for applications.  Well, a week ago, as I wound up this Java class I just took, NetBeans was going catatonic on me fairly regularly.  I noticed that the light on the drive that I use for nothing but the page file (three drives, no waiting) was on all the time.  So, the next time I booted up I looked at the available RAM and it said 160MB.  Another time it said 110MB.  How in bloody hell can you boot the same computer with the same software loaded and--before you start any apps--have 160MB left one time and 110MB another time 15 or 20 minutes later?  I swear that Windows does shit all by itself that Microsoft is not even aware of.  The consensus of opinion at work and school was that 512MB of RAM is probably no longer adequate for a housewife who turns her computer on once a month.  So I sent off for another stick--a 1GB one.

Well, the first thing I did when I got it was start TaskManager to see if my new memory was showing.  It was.  Temporarily.  It showed about 1.17GB or so available.  Makes perfect sense.  The 170MB or so I had and the 1GB I just got.  But.  As I sit there and watch it, it starts to dwindle.  It is now bobbing around 930MB.  Something on the order of 250MB just swirled down the rat hole that is Windows.  My cohort tells me that Windows is adjusting to the new memory.  Letting its belt out a couple of notches.  There were things that had to be paged that can now live in RAM.  Makes sense, I guess.  But what in God's name does an operating system running on a desktop computer need with 600MB+ of RAM?  Of course, now that I have half again that much available for me, I can go back to being a contented sheep of a consumer and not notice the bloated corpulence of our entire civilization.

What in the world am I complaining about?  NetBeans loads five times faster than it did and the page file drive has gone to sleep.

And besides, the washer just finished.
