But, but . . .

It can only have a purpose if it has an end.  An end that the purpose can be a means to.  No end, no purpose,  If you feel you have to dial eternity into it, because you're afraid for it ever to end, then forget having a purpose.  Truly endless things have no purpose.  A purpose would drive them to an end sooner rather than later.  If you want eternity, become comfortable with purposelessness.  Learn to just be, without being anything in particular.  If you crave purpose, prepare to die.  Or change jobs, or get married, or get divorced, or lose your wallet.  Get ready for the change that is already nipping at your heels.
