Mistress America

"Mistress America" is a cute, engaging, entertaining film.  With its semi-quirky, off-hand, tongue-in-cheek tone it's very reminiscent of "Frances Ha" and only a little less so of "Damsels In Distress" (one of my personal favorites).  Greta Gerwig is one of my favorite actors and I would probably pay money to see her even in a bad movie, but "Mistress America" isn't that; it's thoroughly enjoyable.  The supporting cast is very good including Lola Kirke who might well be considered the star or at least a co-star.  Lola Kirke's persona as Tracy is eerily similar to Greta Gerwig in voice, gestures, expressions and speech patterns.  There were a few places where I wondered if Greta hadn't voiced in Tracy's dialogue, the low-register somewhat nasaly voice was so similar to Gerwig's own.  All in all, it works.  Go see it.
