Phrembah (a potato-like mystery)
That's what they did for me. Everyone is always trying to tell you how to be, especially when you're a teenager. They're always trying to change your behavior somehow: 'You should do this. Don't do that. Don't be so . . . ,' the underlying message being that you're defective or incomplete or substandard.
My buds said, 'You should be exactly as you are---only happy. Be happy about being exactly as you are. Make yourself comfortable and be happy about it. Just ignore all the people who try to goad you into being this way or that. Be calm, clear, capable, peaceful, happy, and we'll help however we can. We are on your side, not on the side of some person somebody thinks you should be---your side. Affection and acceptance are our gift to you and we'd like the same from you, if that's okay.'
God! Talk about liberating."
